dsm-firmenich to Launch Algal Omega-3 with EPA/DHA Ratio Matching Fish Oil

The new ingredient, life’sOMEGA 03020, serves as a sustainable alternative to fish oil sourced from algae in an enclosed and controlled environment.

Ingredient supplier dsm-firmenich is set to launch a new algal omega-3 ingredient, life’sOMEGA 03020, in North America. The single-source omega-3 ingredient is the first on the market to have the same ratio of EPA and DHA as fish oil, the company reported.

The ingredient, which contains a 1.5:1 EPA to DHA ratio, offers dietary supplement brands a more sustainable algal source, at a time when the marine omega-3 category is facing supply challenges due to climate and environmental impacts which limit the availability of traditional fish oil.

“The pending launch of life’sOMEGA O3020 marks another milestone in the development of our unique life’s portfolio, which has the potential to truly transform the omega-3 market,” said Brent MacDonald, director of global product marketing at dsm-firmenich. “This highly concentrated plant-based EPA and DHA solution will support greater supply security and help our customers achieve their sustainability goals, especially as life’sOMEGA is produced in a controlled and closed environment, with zero impact on marine ecosystems. We will continue to innovate and expand our life’s portfolio, offering our partners and consumers more options to meet their market and nutritional needs.”

“It has been estimated that 80% of the world’s population does not consume the daily omega-3 amounts recommended by experts ,” said Chris Kalodis, marketing manager at dsm-firmenich. “Algal-based EPA and DHA sources can play an essential role in addressing these deficiencies worldwide, offering alternatives to consumers without compromise when making nutritional choices. We continue to invest heavily in research and development in this space to ensure greater choice for our customers and their consumers without compromising on quality or product performance.”

The new ingredient is the only commercially-available algae-based omega-3 which delivers EPA and DHA from a single source, the company report. The algae is produced using proprietary precision fermentation of a non-GMO algae grown in a controlled, enclosed, and inland environment which helps the company to ensure purity. Multiple production locations for the ingredient will help to ensure that its supply is reliable, dsm-firmenich reports.

The new ingredient will first launch in North America, and is expected to achieve regulatory clearance in the U.S. by January 2024.
